About Holland America Line
If you had to choose one word to describe the Holland America Line, that word would be "honored". Line is arguably the most historic and tradition-laden in the sea. His first ship, Rotterdam 1684 tons, sailed on travel between the Netherlands and New York in 1873, and today, HAL ships sail around the world. The line was originally named the Netherlands-America Steamship Company, but soon became known as Holland America Line for bringing large numbers of immigrants from Holland to America. The company concentrates on transatlantic passenger trade, as well as on commercial freight until the 1970s. the first passenger vessel purpose-built built in 1973, and since then, the line has concentrated on cruise vacation travel.
In 1978, Holland America moved its headquarters from Rotterdam to Stamford, Connecticut. corporate headquarters and then moved to Seattle, Washington in 1983, in order to consolidate operations with Westours, Alaska tour company in which Holland America bought the rights to control. In 1988, Holland America purchased Windstar Cruises, operators of four-and five-masted, sailing ship guided by a computer. Windstar eventually sold to operators of smaller vessels. One year later, the giant Carnival Corporation obtained a Holland America Line, which remains headquartered in Seattle.
Holland America Line now may be the cruise lines based in the U.S., but continues to maintain strong relationships with Dutch heritage. Ships in the fleet - since the 1890s and continues today - bear the suffix "dam." Most of the names are inspired by actual dam across the river in the Netherlands. In other cases, like with Vista class of ships, the name is the point of the compass (East is Oosterdam, Westerdam is West, Noordam is the North, etc.). Many of the names in their incarnation fourth, fifth or sixth. Eurodam, offering the latest HAL, was baptized in Rotterdam in July 2008 and by none other than the Netherlands' Queen Beatrix. At the end of 2003, Holland America announced a new initiative, known as "Signature of Excellence." This program focuses on updates and upgrades of existing vessels. The Retreat, adults-only pool, will be added to the ship, along with a new lounge called Mix that consists of three bars. In April 2009, Veendam is the first ship to get this upgrade.
